The Art of Meaningful Ink

Tattoo Aftercare 101: Tips from Edinburgh’s Leading Tattoo Shop

Introduction
So, you finally got your new tattoo—exciting, right? Whether it’s your very first piece or just another addition to your collection, one thing’s for sure: how you take care of it in the first few weeks makes all the difference. A properly healed tattoo looks sharper, lasts longer, and stays as vibrant as the day you got it.
At Sanatorium Tattoo, we don’t just create amazing tattoos—we also help you keep them looking great for life. Whether you came in for a tattoo consultation or just walked out of our studio with fresh ink, here’s everything you need to know about tattoo aftercare to keep your new piece in top shape.

Tattoo Aftercare: The Must-Know Basics1. Keep It Covered (But Not for Too Long)
Your artist will wrap your tattoo before you leave, and while it might be tempting to peel it off and admire your new ink right away, hold off! That covering is there to protect your fresh tattoo from bacteria and irritation.
  • How long should you keep it on? Most artists recommend a few hours, but your artist will give you specific instructions.
  • Why is it important? A fresh tattoo is like an open wound—it needs protection at first to prevent infections.
Once you remove the bandage, your tattoo journey officially begins!

2. The First Wash: Take It Easy
When you do take that bandage off, you’ll want to clean your tattoo gently. Here’s how:
  • Use lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap (no fancy body washes!).
  • Avoid scrubbing—just let the water run over your tattoo and lightly pat it dry with a clean towel.
  • Wash your tattoo twice a day (morning and night) to keep it fresh and clean.

3. Moisturize—But Don’t Overdo It
Keeping your tattoo hydrated is key, but too much lotion can be just as bad as not enough.
  • What to use: A lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer or a tattoo-specific balm.
  • How often: A thin layer 2-3 times a day should do the trick.
  • Why it matters: Dry skin can lead to scabbing and cracking, which might affect how your tattoo heals.
4. Avoid the Sun Like the Plague
We get it—Edinburgh isn’t exactly known for its tropical weather. But even on cloudy days, UV rays can fade your new tattoo.
  • For the first two weeks: Keep it covered with loose clothing.
  • Once it’s healed: Use SPF 30+ sunscreen whenever your tattoo is exposed.
  • Why it matters: Sun damage can make colors fade and blur the details of your tattoo over time.

5. The Itch Phase: Hands Off!
At some point, your tattoo is going to start itching like crazy—but whatever you do, don’t scratch it!
  • Why does it itch? It’s part of the natural healing process.
  • How to deal with it:
  • Lightly slap the area if the itch is unbearable.
  • Apply a small amount of moisturizer to soothe the skin.
Scratching or picking at peeling skin can pull out ink and leave you with an uneven, patchy tattoo. Let it heal naturally!

6. No Swimming, Saunas, or Long Baths
Thinking of hitting Portobello Beach or taking a relaxing bath? Not yet!
  • Why avoid water? Pools, hot tubs, and even bathwater can introduce bacteria and cause infections.
  • How long should you wait? At least 2-4 weeks, or until your tattoo is completely healed.
  • Showers are fine! Just keep them short and avoid direct water pressure on your tattoo.
Tattoo Booking FAQs
If you’re planning a tattoo, bring any reference images, an idea of where you want it, and any questions you have for your artist. Sanatorium Tattoo offers expert consultations to help you refine your design.
A little redness, peeling, and itching is normal. However, if you notice excessive swelling, pus, or a foul smell, contact your tattoo artist or a doctor immediately.
You should avoid heavy sweating and friction on your tattoo for at least one to two weeks. If it’s in a spot where sweat or tight clothing will rub against it, give it more time.
It’s best to avoid alcohol for 24–48 hours after getting tattooed, as it can thin your blood and slow down healing.
It’s normal for tattoos to settle a little after healing. If you notice uneven spots, don’t worry—most tattoo studios (including Sanatorium Tattoo) offer free or affordable touch-ups.
Take Care of Your Tattoo, and It’ll Last a Lifetime
A tattoo isn’t just a piece of art—it’s an investment in your skin. Treat it right, and it’ll stay looking incredible for years to come.
